FSSAI Registration vs License

FSSAI is an abbreviation for ‘Food safety and standard authority of India’; it is an apex statutory body established in 2006 that governs and set guidelines for food manufacturing, processing, import-export, transportation and selling in India as per the food safety and standard act 2006, and regulations, 2011.

Any food business operator who is an individual manufacturer, transporter, or sells any food product, such as street food vendors, Dhabas owners, Hawkers or a petty industry relating to the food business which adheres to the following criteria is required to have an FSSAI Basic Registration.

FSSAI License

FSSAI licence is categorised into two different kinds of licensing according to the nature of FBOs. The licence registration is done if they fulfil the criteria for the FSSAI licence set by the governing body.

Any FBO with an annual turnover of more than INR 12 lakh up to the maximum of INR 20 Crore, such as 3-star hotel owners, medium-scale food manufacturers, traders, marketers, and wholesalers these FBOs are expected to opt for an FSSAI state license from the FSSAI licensing authority.

Any food business operator such as manufacturer exporter of spices, importer merchants, large-scale food manufacturers, transporters, and FBO with an annual turnover of more than Rs. 20 crore or operating in central government-owned premises are needed to have an FSSAI Central License from the FSSAI central licensing authority (CLA) to commence their food businesses in India.
