Types of BIS Certifications:

Following are the various certifications that different businesses can apply to : 

FMCS 

FMCS is an acronym for Foreign manufacturers Certification Scheme which was established in the year 2000 under the BIS Act 2016. Its role is to ensure the quality and safety standards , thus protecting public health.  The non-native manufacturers apply for BIS FMCS certificate to begin or expand their business within India while they continue to manufacture their products outside India. The issuance of FMCS Certification is performed at the BIS headquarters located in Delhi. The manufacturing firm must appoint an AIR i.e. Authorization of Indian Representative to submit all the necessary details to all the BIS authorities and other arrangements of factory inspection and sample testing. An AIR must be fully informed about BIS FMCS standards as well as the Rules and Regulation of the government to avoid any complications in the future.FMCS certified products consist of a 7-8  digit number for identification of the product . FMCS certifications is a guarantee for the public to put trust in the product of the respective firm. It helps in gaining recognition also resulting in the increase in sales.  All products that are applicable for registration except the Electronic Products.

BIS CRS

BIS CRS is an acronym for BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme which states that all electronic and information technology items that are to be sold in the market must be considered in this scheme. This was declared by the Ministry of Electronics , Information and Technology in 2012. It is essential to understand that manufacturers cannot import, produce or sell electronic and information technology related items in the market without valid permission by the BIS authorities as any electronic product existing in the market without certification can have  manufacturing issues  which can pose a threat to public safety .   It takes around 2-3 months in the process for the firm to attain the certification for further trading. The initial certification is valid till 2 years. The registration is done in R no. After all the submission of documents and testing process , the company issues the CRS license to the frim. 

Initially, it consisted of 15 product categories, later on various new products were added . Television, Computer, Mobile Phones ,Cameras , Power supply etc.

Eco Mark Scheme

Under this scheme , the BIS authority is accountable for ensuring the products are environmentally friendly. This scheme is established to make sure no hazardous chemicals or items which are a threat to the environment  are not available in the market for public consumption. Firstly the manufacturer submits all the documents and after it is made certain that the manufacturing firm is in  compliance with mentioned  BIS standards, the license is issued to the manufacturer for trading of their business within India. The provided license allows the manufacturer to use “ECO mark” along with the ISI Mark assuring the customers about the genuinity of the products.  Manufacturing eco-friendly products is beneficial for the manufacturers as it helps them attract certain types of customers . ISI MARK

ISI is an abbreviation for Indian Standard Institution.It was established in the year 2000 .  ISI certifications is the most common certification scheme. License is granted to manufacturers provided they conform to the BIS standards i.e. high-rated quality of products , safety of consumers, reliability of product. After the submission and verification of all the necessary documents , the BIS authorities make a visit to the factory premises to examine the location, manufacturing equipment, manufacturing process , quality control parameters , product testing ( at in-built lab / NABL certified lab) etc.

After a successful laboratory results , the license is provided to the manufacturer. Generally, it takes around 4-6 months to get the license ,after which the manufacturer can trade with an ISI logo on their product. ISI mark is a testament for the manufacturer to convert the general public into a buyer for their respective product.  Any product which has ISI certification will consist of a 7-8 digit number for identification of a product. ISI mark products include Steel, Electrical Appliances, Cables, Safety Glass, Automotive rims etc. 

Simplified Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers

Simplified Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers as its name suggests it is a scheme established for the domestic manufacturers to apply for the BIS certification to trade within India. This is a faster process in comparison to other BIS certification and it is available for a wider range of products. This scheme offers a license in 30 days of application. But , it is essential to understand that the manufacturer has to fulfill certain conditions to apply for this scheme such as having quality management parameters, product quality conforming to Indian Standards, submission of application and its remittance. The domestic manufacturers also have to follow the same process as any international manufacturer . After the successful completion of the BIS procedures and approval of the product quality and efficiency , the license is provided to the domestic manufacturer. Certain products like cylinders, valves etc. are not included in this scheme. 

Hallmarking Scheme

Under this BIS scheme, all the precious metals or metal objects which are imported or sold in India are tested to check its purity. This scheme was established in the year 2000 to protect consumers from adulterated metal articles as well as to  protect the manufacturers from any legal implications as they maintain the standards of purity in the object. The Gold Hallmarking Scheme was established in 2000 while the Silver Hallmarking Scheme was established in 2005. It is now made mandatory in 288 districts of India. This scheme is implied in many countries to assess the fineness of the jewelry items. Jewelers who want to obtain the license can apply online . This scheme is a valuable asset in the jewelry industry as it mandates manufacturers to produce high-quality jewelry in India. Jewelries are examined at the Assaying and Hallmarking centers approved by BIS. • ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001 and 14001 are international standards that manufacturers maintain to sell their product in the market. These standards are not specific to Indian Market’s standards. 

• ISO 14001 is an environmental management system standard organizations take care to enhance its effective environmental performance. It is established to lessen the negative influence of an organization on the environment. 

• ISO 9001 is a quality management system standard organizations take care to enhance their quality management parameters. It helps in enhancing the quality of products for public consumption and fulfill customer expectations.
