Aluminum Import Monitoring System (AIMS) – Process, Fees & Documents

Aluminium Import Monitoring System also known as AIMS registration, is a mandatory requirement for importing non-ferrous metals products in India such as copper, steel & aluminium. According to DGFT Notification No. 61/2015−2020, Dated 31st March 2021 the GOI has made necessary amendments in the Import policy of Copper and Aluminium under chapter 74 & chapter 76, mandating all the importers to seek a prior approval from DGFT. A single AIMS registration provides freedom to consignee for importing multiple aluminium products & consignment within the validity period of registration. Failure to comply with the rules of NFMIMS, could attract penal provisions under Section 11(2) of the FTDR Act, 1992, attracting a penalty not less than 10,000/- & up to 5 times the value of the aluminium products.

What is Aluminium Import Monitoring System registration?

To control and monitor the import of aluminum and aluminum-related products, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India, launched the Aluminium Import Monitoring System (AIMS) Registration, an online platform. Before their goods can be cleared through customs, all importers who deal with notified aluminum items must comply with this requirement.

Importers are required by AIMS to register their shipment information on the DGFT portal, including the HS code, product description, quantity, CIF value, country of origin, and port of import. At the time of customs clearance, the Bill of Entry must include the unique registration number that is generated after the application is submitted.

This system enables the government to protect domestic producers, prevent unfair dumping of inferior aluminum, and maintain trade transparency. AIMS registration guarantees hassle-free import operations, DGFT compliance, and efficient customs clearance for importers.
