Non-Ferrous Metal Import Monitoring System (NFMIMS) is a compulsory registration requirement for import of certain non-ferrous metal products in India, including those falling under Chapters 74 and 76 of the ITC (HS) classification. The System was introduced by DGFT through Notification No.61/2015-2020, dated 31st March 2021. The system mandates online registration before the import of consignments. Upon successful registration, a Unique Registration Number (URN) prefixed with “NFM” is allotted.
The application under NFMIMS must be made not earlier than 60 days and not later than 5 days prior to the expected date of arrival of the shipment in India. The registration is applicable for various shipments of the same commodity within the period of validity. Non-compliance with the requirements of NFMIMS will attract penal measures under the FTDR Act, 1992, including the amount of monetary penalty as provided in the Act.

NFMIMS Registration Process
The CIMS Registration is a mandatory online procedure managed by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Importers of notified copper products must complete this process before filing the Bill of Entry.
- Step 1: Registration on DGFT Portal: Login to the DGFT portal using the correct IEC number and the registered email ID and mobile number.
- Step 2: Online Application Submission: Open the NFMIMS portal and fill out the application form by providing information such as: HS Code, product description, country of origin, port of discharge, CIF value, and importer information.
- Step 3: Payment of Registration Fee: Proceed with the payment of the registration fee for the Non-Ferrous Metals Import Monitoring System, which is ₹500 per consignment.
- Step 4: Get Automatic Registration Number (ARN): After making the payment, an Automatic Registration Number (ARN) is generated, which is valid for 75 days from the date of registration. The ARN is required for customs clearance.
- Step 5: Complete the Customs Clearance Process: The Bill of Entry (BOE) number must be updated in the NFMIMS portal within 15 days of acquiring the ARN number. The customs department will not be able to process the clearance without a valid NFMIMS registration number.
