Eligibility for FSSAI registration in Mumbai

The eligibility criteria for FSSAI license and registration are predefined as per the Food safety and standard Act, 2006 and regulations 2011. Licensing criteria are divided into three levels as per the nature and kind of businesses.

Step-1 Apply for FSSAI registration

FSSAI license registration is a 14-digit number provided by the apex body after registration which contains details of the food manufacturer.

Step-2 Inspection by FSSAI authorities

Step-3 Clearance for approval

As per the FSS guidelines the registration & license fee for FSSAI is classified into 3 classes.

Validity and Renewal of FSSAI registration


  • The maximum validity of FSSAI registration or license is of 5 years and a minimum of 1 year.

  • Food business operators must apply for license renewal 180 days before the date of expiry.

  • The FSSAI license will be considered null and void after the date of expiry and all the work should be suspended with immediate effect as per the guidelines.

  • FBOs filing for renewal from the 1st-90th day after the expiry date shall be charged 3 times more than the annual fee and from the 91st-180th day, FBOs shall be charged 5 times more than the original annual fee.

  • Unsanitary manufacturing condition: In the preparation of any kind of food, personal hygiene and the cleanness of the premises are the most important factor; hence FSSAI has guidelines for hygiene and cleanness of manufacturing place, and any FBOs found in violation of these rules are liable to fine of not more than Rs. 1 lakh as per the Act.
