Food and hospitality businesses are one of the fastest-growing sectors in India. In recent years, this industry has grown significantly with the influx of foreign tourists, food bloggers and backpacker travelers and changes in the dining habits of local customers. Recently many small and medium hotel businesses have come up significantly all over the country. Therefore the Food safety and standard authority of India has decided to make it obligatory to have an FSSAI license registration for hotel businesses to ensure better quality and standard food products for all in India.

The food business is one of the fastest-growing industries in India, and hotels are part and parcel of the Food industry. Therefore it has become necessary for apex authorities to set guidelines and maintain high standards and safe food products by issuing FSSAI licenses for hotel businesses.

FSSAI license for hotels is mandatory as per their eligibility, and these licenses are issued as per the eligibility criteria classified under FSS Act. Licensing authority has categorized its license registration into three classes.

1. FSSAI Basic registration: Foodservice hotels with turnover upto 12 LPA need FSSAI basic registration for hotel businesses.
2. FSSAI State license: Hotel businesses with a turnover of more than 12 LPA to 20 crores per annum must have an FSSAI State license.
3. FSSAI Central license: Hotels with a turnover of more than 20 crores per annum or running businesses in multiple states all such hotels are required to have a Central FSSAI License from authorities.

The application for the license can be filled online through the FSSAI portal in simple steps.

Step-1: online application

1. Open the FosCos portal and click on apply for registration tab
2. Select your state or city and open the food services tab
3. Select the hotel food services for which you want to apply
4. Fill out all the mandatory forms
5. Upload all the required documents
6. Submit the license fee

After that, an application reference number will be generated and provided to you to track the application status on the Foscos portal or you can use our FSSAI application status tool to track your FSSAI license status.

Step-2: Inspection by FSSAI

Within the next 7 days, FSSAI authorities will respond to your application. If the application is rejected, an inspection on your premise will be held by a FOOD SAFETY OFFICER.

Step-3: Approval from FSSAI

After a satisfactory inspection of the food safety officer's premises and document verification, the authorities will give license clearance.

Step-4: Issuance of license

The license will be issued within 30 business days, which is mandatory to display during business hours by all hotel owners at prominent places for the satisfaction of consumers.

These are the following documents required for FSSAI registration/license for Hotel Businesses as per FSS guidelines.

General documents for FSSAI license/registration for Hotel businesses

1. Identity proof of hotel owner such as Aadhar card
2. Ownership proof of premise
3. NOC from the owner of the premise is rented
4. Clearance from Local Authorities

Other important documents

1. Form-B
2. Form -IX
3. Partnership deed or memorandum or article of association or company incorporation certificate or LLP agreement if required
4. Must provide Coop act-1861/multistate Coop Act-2002 certificate
5. For hotel premises, NOC from the Ministry of tourism is mandatory ( in the case of 3-star and 5-star hotels )
6. Origin of raw materials
7. The layout of the kitchen premise of the hotel
8. Declaration in the case of registration in Delhi and Himachal Pradesh
9. Analysis report of water

1. The fee for FSSAI basic registration for hotel businesses is Rs. 100 per annum
2. The fee for the central FSSAI license is Rs. 7,500 + 18% GST per annum
3. The fee for a state FSSAI license is Rs. 2,000-5,000 per annum

Note : As per the new norm of FSSAI. The applicants are required to pay only Initial fee of ₹1000 + 18% GST on it for their FSSAI licenses. However once the application is processed and passed by the licensing authorities then the rest of the differential amount i,e respective license fee along with differential GST has to be paid by the applicant within 30 working days. If the applicant failed to pay the amount then approval will be auto rejected.

Note: The aforementioned Fees is exclusive of GST.

1. The maximum validity of an FSSAI license for hotels is up to 5 years and a minimum of up to 1 year.
2. Hotel owners can for renewal apply 180 days before the due date to renew their FSSAI license.
3. In the case renewal of a license is not filed till 30 days before the expiry date, a late fee of INR 100 per day is to be paid by FBO, along with the renewal fee.
4. In the case of FBOs filling for FSSAI renewal from the 1st to 90th-day after the day of expiry, then they shall be charged 3 times the original annual fee respectively and 5 times if they appear after the 90th day from the day of expiry.

1. During business hours FSSAI license must be displayed at prominent places to all the customers.
2. The cooking area must be clean, properly managed, and ventilated, and there must be separate sinks for washing utensils, cleaning equipment, and cleaning raw food materials.
3. Must check the quality of the food items routinely to avoid the degeneration of raw food items.
4. Must maintain personal work hygiene as per FSSAI guidelines.
5. The ingredients used to prepare food must be fresh and cooked correctly.
6. Raw Food items must be stored respectively as per their ideal condition to avoid deterioration.

Violation of FSSAI compliances can lead to heavy penalties and cancellation of the license.
