BIS Registration is getting a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for any product that meets Indian Standards. BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India created by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act of 2016, a part of the Indian Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. BIS has been involved with many activities such as Standards Formulation and product Certification, Testing, Training Services, Hallmarking, Laboratory Services Calibration Schemes, and more. The BIS registration serves as an independent assurance of product safety, quality, and reliability.
The Bureau of Indian Standards grants licenses to manufacturers for their products that are listed in BIS's voluntary and mandatory certification programs. Manufacturers can use the standard marking on their products following the issuance of the license from BIS. Although acquiring a BIS license is optional, the Indian government has made certain items necessary to preserve the environment, public health, national security, and the well-being of people, animals, and plants. It also seeks to prevent unfair trading practices.
BIS Registration, also known as substantial quality assurance compliance, is essential when analyzing IT and electronic products. This article will provide complete information regarding BIS registration.

The BIS ISI Registration Certificate is issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to manufacturers whose products comply with specified Indian Standards (IS codes). This certification is mandatory for certain categories of products under the Quality Control Orders (QCOs) and ensures safety, quality, and compliance with regulations.
Companies manufacturing, importing, distributing or selling products that fall under the category of Quality Control Orders (QCO) must carry an appropriate Indian Standard [ISI] mark on their products, which is necessary for legal compliance as well as to build customer confidence and enhance brand image.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) provides both the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS) and Scheme X, enabling foreign manufacturers to acquire BIS licenses and market their ISI-marked products in India through authorized Indian representatives. With these two schemes, foreign manufacturers will remain compliant with all applicable regulatory requirements.

The key benefits of BIS registration are increasing consumer confidence in products, assuring safety through compliance with Government-established safety standards, allowing access to legal markets, and increasing brand reputation.
There are two (2) categories of BIS Certified Products based either on Product Type or by the Regulations for that product. Given below are the major types:
To apply for BIS Registration, manufacturers need to submit the following documents along with the application:

The process of obtaining ISI certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards can be classified into the following four essential steps. This ensures a transparent and systematic approach to acquiring BIS certification for your product.
The applicant must Apply online for BIS registration on the portal. To apply, you must also provide all necessary documents/business credentials and pay the applicable fee according to BIS schemes. At this point, it is important to ensure that you have submitted accurate documents to increase your chances of getting approved.
After successfully submitting your application, a BIS officer will visit your manufacturing facility to conduct a preliminary Inspection and verification for the purposes of verifying your manufacturing facility's legalness/conformance to product standards and verifying your in-house product testing capabilities.
The initial investigation or inspection has taken place after which the officer will take a small amount of the product and ship it to a laboratory recognized by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Once the BIS licensing authority has received and approved the laboratory test results, they will conduct a performance review report for future processes and decision-making regarding whether to grant a certificate.
Once the inspection and testing have been conducted, the Licensing authority will review the Inspection and Testing Report, and if the results and compliance indicate that a certificate of conformity can be issued, then the applicant may receive the authority to display the BIS Standard Mark on its products.
Understanding the BIS Registration charges in India is essential before applying. The bis certificate cost includes government fees for application, processing, and registration, which vary depending on whether it is a new application, renewal, or the inclusion of a new product or model.
| Type of Fee | New Application | Renewal | Inclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application Fee | ₹1,000 | ₹1,000 | – |
| Processing Fee | ₹25,000 × 2 = ₹50,000 | ₹25,000 × 2 = ₹50,000 | ₹15,000 × 2 = ₹30,000 |
| Registration Fee | ₹1,000 × 2 = ₹2,000 | ₹1,000 × 2 = ₹2,000 | – |
| Total | ₹53,000 | ₹53,000 | ₹30,000 |
Note: The above fees are exclusive of GST.
Consultancy charges are extra. Our BIS certification consultancy services start from ₹9,999, covering documentation, application filing, and coordination with BIS.
The BIS certification is valid for two years. Manufacturers can renew BIS certification if there are no changes to the products or standards. The renewed BIS certificate is valid for a minimum of one year, and up to five years.
Renewal of the BIS certification is subject to a minimum annual advance marking fee as well as a license fee. In addition to the minimum annual advance marking fee, renewal of BIS Certification requires payment of a license fee and renewal of an expired BIS Certificate may incur an additional late penalty.
Conclusion
To be able to sell their products legally in India, manufacturers need to have BIS Certification to ensure that their products meet safety and quality standards. In either case, obtaining BIS registration can benefit all manufacturers regardless of the type of product. This includes improving product quality, reliability, and safety. To obtain BIS certification, manufacturers must file paperwork, have an initial inspection performed on their product(s), have their product(s) tested, receive a certificate for their product(s), and affix the applicable marking on their product(s). Being certified by BIS provides manufacturers with an opportunity to enhance their company’s reputation, compete successfully in the marketplace and grow their business within the overall growth of the India manufacturing industry.
