The FSSAI is the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is responsible for issuing FSSAI registration and safeguarding consumers' health by ensuring that food products meet certain safety and quality standards.

All food businesses must obtain a license or registration from the FSSAI. The food business operator must apply for the license or registration in the prescribed form and the prescribed fees to the licensing authority. The FSSAI has prescribed different types of licenses and registrations for different food businesses based on their nature and scale of operation. The food business operator must apply for a license appropriate for their business.

What is FSSAI Registration

FSSAI registration ensures that your premises, equipment, and food handling practices meet food safety standards. FSSAI registration number is a 14-digit unique licensing number allocated by FSSAI to concerning food business operators as per their eligibility criteria described under the FSS act 2006.

Types of FSSAI Registration


FSSAI has categorized its licensing into three types. Each type of FSSAI registration has different eligibility criteria and requirements. So, it is important to choose the right one for your business.

  • FSSAI Basic Registration: This is for small-scale food businesses with an annual turnover of up to INR 12 lakh.
  • FSSAI State License: This is for food businesses with an annual turnover of more than INR 12 lakh but less than INR 20 crore.
  • FSSAI Central License: This is for food businesses with an annual turnover of more than INR 20 crore or FBOs operating in multiple states or on central government premises.

All the small-scale food business operators with an annual turnover of less than Rs.12 Lakh are required to have an FSSAI Basic registration. The following food businesses are eligible for FSSAI registration:

FSSAI license Eligibility

The FSSAI license is classified into two categories, i.e. State License and Central License, depending upon the nature and size of food businesses.

  • Food business operators such as manufacturers, 3-star hotel business owners, and transporters have an annual turnover between Rs. 12 lakh to Rs. 20 crore are required to have an FSSAI State license from the licensing authorities.
  • FBO is commencing in food products like proprietary food, import-export, or food manufacturer operating in multiple states or having an annual turnover of more than Rs. 20 Crore per annum or operating in central government premises must have an FSSAI Central license to commerce in India.

Process fssai Registration

Step-1 online Application

FBOs must file an Online FSSAI registration form on FosCos respectively according to the nature of their businesses and upload all the required documents and supporting documents along with the registration fee. After the successful submission, an application reference number will be provided to them, which can be used to track the status of your application. Step-2 Inspection by FSSAI authorities

The FSSAI food safety officer will conduct a thorough inspection of the premises to ensure that all the necessary compliance and food safety norms are followed.

Step-3 Clearance for approval

After the adequate assessment of the business premise and document, verification will be approved issuing of FSSAI registration or licence, depending upon the nature of the business, by the Food safety officer to concerned licensing authorities.

Step-4 Issuance of license

Once the approval is granted, FSSAI will issue a registration/licence unique 14-digit numerical numbers, which shall display during business hours and must be printed on all the products.

Documents Required for Obtaining FSSAI Registration/license

  1. Legal identity proof like an Aadhar card
  2. Residence proof
  3. Detail of food business operator
  4. NOC from the local administration
  5. Form IX for basic registration
  6. Source of raw material for manufacturing

  6. For 100% EOU certificate from the ministry of commerce is required

  8. In the case of hotels, NOC from the Ministry of tourism is compulsory

FSSAI Licence Cost

Concerned Food business operators need to pay the FSSAI registration fees and FSSAI food license fee at the time of submitting the registration form on FosCos website

  • FSSAI Basic Registration fee is Rs. 100 per annum.
  • FSSAI State License cost is Rs. 2,000 - 5,000 per annum.
  • FSSAI Central License cost is Rs. 7,500 + 18% GST per annum.

Note: The aforementioned Fees is exclusive of GST.

Note : As per the new norm of FSSAI. The applicants are required to pay only Initial fee of ₹1000 + 18% GST on it for their FSSAI licenses. However once the application is processed and passed by the licensing authorities then the rest of the differential amount i,e respective license fee along with differential GST has to be paid by the applicant within 30 working days. If the applicant failed to pay the amount then approval will be auto rejected.

These are the penalties laid down for non-compliance with FSSAI.

FSSAI registration renewal is as important as getting a new registration. The license is issued for the validity of 1-5 years. Hence all the food business operators must file for FSSAI renewal 30 days before the due date. FBOs who fail to renew their FSSAI registration shall be deemed unfit to commence any business as per guidelines.
