In India, renewing an AEO certificate is key for businesses that want to take the benefits of being an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO). Under the AEO certification in customs, this status is given to companies that follow customs rules and maintain strong supply chain security. The renewal ensures that the business still meets all the required customs and safety standards.
The AEO program, supported by the World Customs Organization (WCO), is a big part of India’s efforts to strengthen its trade system. It helps build global trust by offering benefits like faster customs clearance, fewer checks, and cost savings. To keep getting these perks, businesses need to make sure their AEO certificate stays valid through proper renewal
For AEO-T1 certificate holders, CBIC has made things easier by introducing an auto-renewal system. They only need to submit a yearly self-declaration. But for AEO-T2 and higher tiers, the regular AEO certificate renewal process in India still applies. Keeping the certificate active proves a company’s commitment to secure, smooth, and efficient international trade, something that really matters in today’s fast-paced global market.

AEO certificate renewal is the process through which businesses in India maintain their Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status by ensuring continued compliance with customs rules and international trade security standards. The renewal is necessary to keep receiving benefits such as faster customs clearance, fewer inspections, and financial advantages.
Only AEO-T1 certificate holders who were certified on or after April 1, 2019, are eligible for auto-renewal as per CBIC Circular No. 18/2021-Customs. They must submit an annual self-declaration between October 1 and December 31 each year to continue enjoying their AEO status without reapplying.
AEO-T2, T3, and LO certificate holders must apply manually for renewal by logging into the AEO portal, preparing updated annexures and supporting documents, and submitting their renewal application either online or at their zonal customs office before the certificate expires.
The renewal application must be submitted before the expiry of the certificate specifically, 60 days in advance for AEO-T2 and 90 days in advance for both AEO-T3 and AEO-LO certificate holders.
Businesses must provide documents such as Import Export Code (IEC), PAN, GST registration, latest audit reports for the past three years, internal control procedures, updated process flows, site layouts, solvency certificate, and declaration letterhead. Additional annexures such as A-E5 for AEO-T2 and Annexure F for AEO-T3 are also required.
To check the validity of an AEO certificate, one must visit the CBIC AEO Portal and click on the "AEO Certificate Validity Check" option. By entering either the AEO Reference Number or IEC, the portal displays the current status and certificate expiry. The certificate can also be downloaded in PDF format from the AEO login dashboard.
The validity of the renewed AEO certificate depends on the tier. AEO-T1 certificates are valid for three years and are auto-renewed. AEO-T2 certificates also have a validity of three years, while AEO-T3 and AEO-LO certificates remain valid for five years after renewal.
Timely renewal of the AEO certificate is important to maintain global trade compliance, enjoy simplified customs procedures, and ensure uninterrupted participation in secure international supply chains. It reflects a company’s commitment to efficient and compliant trade practices.
