
TAN registration is required for all the assessees required to deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) on transactions.
Form 49B is the application form which is to be filled for allotment of TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number).
How to Apply for TAN?
An application for TAN could be made by submitting Form 49B at TIN* facilitation centers. Find your nearest TIN facilitation centre with biometric-based facility.
TAN is allotted to applicants by the Income Tax Department. TAN can be applied for by making an online application or by visiting the Income Tax Department in person.
In case of in-person applications, there’s no need to furnish any supporting documents. However, for online applications, an acknowledgement received after submission of Form 49B must be furnished as proof.

Application Procedure (Online)
- The applicant must fill Form 49B online.
- If there’s an error, it must be rectified and the form re-submitted.
- A confirmation screen with the entered data will be displayed for verification.
- The applicant can then edit or confirm the details before submission.
Acknowledgement
- Once confirmed, an acknowledgement screen will be displayed with:
- A unique 14-digit acknowledgement number
- Name and contact details of the applicant
- Status of the applicant
- Payment details
- Space for signature
- Applicants should save and print this acknowledgement.
- The printed acknowledgement must be signed in the space provided and sent along with the Demand Draft (if any) to the below address:

Payment
The application fee is INR 65.00 (INR 55.00 application charge + 18% GST), non-refundable if the application is rejected.
Demand draft/Cheque should be drawn in favour of NSDL-TIN.
Once the form is submitted, the department verifies the details. If valid, TAN details are sent to the applicant’s address mentioned in Form 49B, or via email if the application was made online.
Pointers for Filling Form 49B
- Form 49B must be filled in English and in capital letters only.
- The Assessing Officer's details are to be filled by the tax deductor/collector. This can be obtained from the Income Tax Office.
- Details like area code, district, and area must be provided. The Income Tax Office can help if unknown.
- All fields in the form must be completed. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.
- The individual responsible for filing tax must specify their designation.
- The applicant must provide a valid Indian address.
