Lead is a soft, malleable, and silvery-white metal that is considered a rare earth metal. It is primarily used in the production of batteries, especially lead-acid batteries which are commonly found in vehicles, solar applications, and backup power systems. Other important electronic goods that utilize lead include solder, electronics components, and radiation shielding.
Despite its widespread use in India, the country does not possess significant lead reserves. As a result, lead recycling has become a crucial aspect of meeting the demand for this essential metal. Recycling lead helps to conserve natural resources, reduce the need for mining, and mitigate the environmental impact associated with lead extraction and processing. However, recycling lead also comes with some potential environmental hazard, therefore the government has put a system in place to regulate the import of lead scrap in India. All the importers are required to obtain import authorisation for their imports in India.
