The Central Pollution Control Board has amended its guidelines regarding the waste management regulations in India. The amendment has added new provisions regarding the used oil under the extended producer responsibility. Previously under the preview of EPR also known as extended producer responsibility waste is categorized in four categories.
However, after the new amendment in EPR waste guidelines a new waste category for used oil is introduced under extended producer responsibility for manufacturer, importer and recyclers. Therefore EPR for used oil is mandatory and all the manufacturers, importers & recyclers are required to get EPR certification for their businesses from CPCB/SPCB respectively.

The Definition of used oil is described under the hazardous waste management rule clause 3 of 2016. "Used oil is a derivative of crude oil or an oil mixture containing synthetic oil. Which includes used engine oil, hydraulic oil, turbine oil, compressor oil and industrial oil" however any other oil specified into part-A of of hazardous waste management rules does not qualifies as waste/used oil, unless it does not satisfy the criteria of waste/used oil in part V of the hazardous waste management rules 2016.
