BIS CRS Certification - Process, Fees & Required Documents

BIS stands for the Bureau of Indian Standards, which is the apex body in India responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of quality and safety standards. The BIS mark on a product indicates that the product has been tested and complies with the highest quality standards. BIS registration is categorized into two types: compulsory and voluntary, depending on the nature of the product and regulatory requirements.

As per the guidelines of the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), manufacturers of electronic goods are required to obtain mandatory BIS Registration for their products in India. According to MeitY, no individual or entity is permitted to manufacture, store, sell, import, or distribute products that do not conform to Indian Standards and do not bear the BIS mark along with a unique Registration Number issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Under the BIS CRS Scheme, manufacturers must have their products tested at BIS-recognized laboratories and then apply for BIS registration using the test report. Once approved, the product must display the BIS Standard Mark along with a unique registration number. • Nomination Letter of AIR (for foreign manufacturers)

The process of BIS CRS Registration in India involves the following steps:

Step-1: Identification of Product IS Standard

Applicants must identify the applicable Indian Standard (IS) for their product, as BIS has specified quality standards for all products under the CRS scheme.

Step-2: Documentation & Testing

After identifying the IS standard, the applicant must prepare the required documents and obtain a product test report from a BIS-recognized laboratory. All documents should be properly enclosed for verification and inspection by BIS.

Step-3: Payment of Application Fee

The applicant needs to fill out the registration form and pay the prescribed application fee at the time of submission.

Step-4: Grant of CRS Certificate

Once the application is reviewed and the inspection is completed, BIS issues the CRS registration certificate, generally within 20–25 working days.

Note : The aforementioned Fees is exclusive of GST.

Foreign Manufacturers and Non-MSME entities are required to pay an additional fee of ₹ 10,000 for their BIS CRS application.
