The government of India started the Startup India initiative to encourage entrepreneurship in India. Under this initiative, the government has reduced compliance for entrepreneurs and existing businesses to promote them.
Businesses can avail various benefits such as tax holidays, easy bank loans and access to SIDBI funds of funds (FoF) or startup India seed funds through DPIIT startup India recognition.
To register as a startup, entities must register on the Startup India portal and apply for DPIIT recognition.

DPIIT stands for "Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade", & it acts as the nodal Department for coordinating the efforts of all Central Government Departments & State Governments for carrying this plan forward.

Note: Businesses with DPIIT recognition are exempted from deposition of EMD (Earnest money deposit) in tender participation on public procurement platforms.
Under the Startup India Action Plan, startups that meet the definition prescribed under G.S.R. notification 127 (E) can apply for recognition under the program. The program aims to create a robust ecosystem and pick up new-age enterprises.
The following are the eligibility criteria for Startup India registration set up by DPIIT.
Companies Age: The entity's operational years and period of existence should be ten years from the date of incorporation.
Companies Type: The Concerning business should be registered with RoC as one of the following types of business under the companies act 2016.
Annual turnover: Annual turnover should be at most 100 crores for the financial years since its inception.
Original entity: The Company should not have been established through the dissolution or reconstruction of an existing enterprise.
Innovative and scalable: It should be working to create & improve products or services and have a company strategy that can be scaled to generate significant wealth and job opportunities.
The following documents are needed to be submitted by the entities for recognition of Startup India by DPIIT.
The first and foremost step before applying under Startup India is that the applicant should be eligible; that is, their entity should be registered as a business entity under the company registration Act.
