About ZED Certificate
The ZED certification scheme is a voluntary program that encourages MSMEs to implement excellent manufacturing practices. The program includes a rating system that allows MSMEs to compare their manufacturing capabilities to national and international norms. Quality, productivity, innovation, and environmental sustainability are among the ten characteristics that comprise the ranking system.
MSMEs must go through a rigorous assessment process by a designated ZED assessor in order to participate in the scheme. An on-site inspection of the MSME's production processes, equipment, and management systems is part of the assessment. Based on the evaluation, the MSME is assigned a ZED rating ranging from ZED1 to ZED5. The higher the grade, the more capable the MSME's manufacturing capabilities are, and the closer it is to realizing the ultimate objective of zero failures and zero environmental impact. This scheme motivates the manufacturers to produce high-quality products.
The ZED certificate comprises of 3 certification levels and the rating of these levels are as follows:
- Bronze: Rating of 2.2 to 2.5.
- Silver: Rating of 2.5 to 3.5.
- Gold: Rating of 3.0 to 3.5.
Advantages of ZED certificate
MSMEs are assisted in obtaining ZED certification. Subsidy for ZED certification cost is:
- Micro-enterprises: 80% subsidy in the cost of ZED certification.
- Small enterprises: 60% subsidy on the cost of ZED certification.
- Medium enterprises: 50% subsidy on the cost of ZED certification.
- Also, an additional 10% subsidy for MSMEs belonging to SC, ST, and women. Another 10% extra subsidy for MSMEs in the Himalayan region, Northeastern Region (NER), Left Wing Extremism (LWE) areas, island territories, or aspirational districts.
- Improved Quality: The ZED certification would help the MSMEs improve their quality standards with the help of two key philosophies, namely 'Zero Defects' and 'Zero Effect'. This would, in turn, reduce rejection, rework, and scraps, save money for the company.
- Increased Productivity: ZED certification can also lead to increased productivity through the betterment of efficiency in processes and reduction of wastage. This is so because ZED looks at continuous improvement that may result in a more streamlined and efficient operation.
- Increased Safety: Improved safety is also facilitated by the ZED certification through the implementation of occupational health principles. This might reduce the chances of accidents and injuries, saving the company money and boosting employee morale.
- Reduced environmental impact: ZED certification can also help reduce the environmental impact of the operation of an MSME. Because ZED focuses on waste minimization and pollution reduction, this will cut down disposal costs for the company and improve its reputation among customers and stakeholders.
- Increased Market Access: ZED certification can facilitate access to new markets for MSMEs. This is because buyers and retailers increasingly prefer suppliers who are certified to high standards. ZED certification can thus demonstrate to such buyers that MSMEs' products and processes meet their requirements.
- Government incentives: There are a few government incentives, which are available for MSMEs that are certified to ZED. These may involve financial assistance, tax breaks, and other forms of preferential treatment when MSMEs bid for government contracts.
- Overall, the ZED certification can provide the following advantages to the MSMEs. These advantages may come in the form of an improvement in the quality, productivity, safety, environmental effects, market access, and financial performance of MSMEs.
