Importance of ZED certificate
ZED, or Zero Defect Zero Effect, is a business initiative that fosters sustainable development through best practice methodologies applied across all types of MSME industries. The ZED certificate helps MSMEs improve their quality and productivity, as well as their environmental impact, by providing an indication of the maturity of the enterprise from a quality and environmental perspective. The ZED certification has 3 levels: bronze, silver and gold.
Additionally, ZED certificate can also provide MSMEs with access to various government programs and incentives. In fact, the government has a wide variety of incentive programs available for MSMEs that have achieved ZED certification. These programs can assist MSMEs with financing their ZED certification as well as enhancing their overall business performance.

What is ZED Certification?
(ZED) Certification program is an ongoing initiative to teach MSMEs about Zero Defect Zero Effect (ZED) practices, encourage them to become MSME Champions, and motivate and reward them for doing so. Through the ZED certification process , MSMEs may significantly decrease waste, boost productivity, disseminate awareness of environmental concerns, conserve energy, make the best use of the resources at their disposal, gain market share, etc.
The ZED Certification aims to improve an MSME's competitiveness through evaluation, assistance, management, technical intervention, etc. The ZED Certification is more than just a certification.
Level-wise Importance for ZED certificate
ZED certificate is further divided down into 3 categories. Below are the levels of importance for each certification level:
1.Importance for Bronze certificate
The importance of the bronze certificate can be summarized as follows.
- Recognized Globally: The bronze certification signifies a measure of excellence and an enduring commitment to achieving social responsibility around the planet. By carrying this mark, small and medium-sized businesses (MSMBs) receive assurance there is consumer confidence in their products and services while serving customers who seek high quality, sustainable and environmentally responsible products worldwide.
- Greater production and quality: The MSME sector can improve the quality and efficiency of the manufacturing processes through ZED. The need to produce ZED Bronze enables MSME businesses to identify the ways that the product could be improved, ultimately reducing the need for rectifications or supplementary production processes resulting in a trail/ wastage of materials and hence less money being wasted by the MSME producers, thereby assisting in the bottom line of the MSME producers.
- More accessible access to new markets: The ZED Bronze is an excellent way for MSMEs to tap into a new local and international customer base, as many buyers and suppliers worldwide accept the certificate.
- Maintain compliance with regulations: By obtaining ZED Bronze certification, MSMEs can demonstrate compliance with various quality, safety, and environmental regulations, which will help avoid penalties and fines and build trust with all levels of government.
- Enhances employee morale and productivity: MSMEs can increase their production levels and their employees' morale. By following the ZED Bronze certification process, MSMEs can create an effective, positive, and supportive workplace for their employees. This is due to the identification and resolution of potential opportunities for employees to increase commitment and engagement to their work and therefore, the entire company will benefit through increased productivity at a higher morale level for employees.
2. Importance for Silver certificate
Here are a few key points about the importance of silver certificates:
- It provides a higher level of recognition compared to the ZED Bronze: It demonstrates improved quality and sustainability by assigning more points for quality and sustainability than for the ZED Bronze level. The ZED Silver certificate is given to MSMEs to improve their business prospects (including getting more customers and partners) and to improve the prices that they can charge for their products and/or services.
- MSMEs can enhance their overall capacity to deliver high-quality products: MSME Certification can improve overall productivity and product quality, as well as provide MSME (micro and small enterprises) with a good baseline for better performance in future certifications. The difference in performance between companies receiving ZED Silver and companies receiving ZED Bronze is due to exceeding ZED Bronze qualifying standards as indicated by their ZED Bronze Certification.
- Access to More Markets: The ZED Silver certificate is accepted by greater numbers of customers (and suppliers) than the ZED Bronze certificate, which means MSMEs that obtain ZED Silver certification will likely be able to subsequently access a greater variety of markets than companies that only obtain ZED Bronze certification, both domestically and internationally.
- MSMEs are subject to an increased number of regulations: MSMEs must meet additional regulations to qualify for ZED Silver certification than for ZED Bronze certification. It further gives MSMEs that attain ZED Silver certification higher compliance protection from fines or other consequences than does ZED Bronze certification.
3. Importance for Gold certificate
Important Characteristics of a Gold Certificate
- Maximum acknowledgement: A Gold certificate is the maximum acknowledgement obtainable via the ZED scheme, and will assist in attracting new clients and business partners while providing higher pricing than what you would be able to do otherwise because your MSME has achieved maximum high standards for product and service quality and sustainability.
- Allows MSMEs to attain even greater quality and productivity levels: The ZED Gold certification requires the MSMEs to meet additional standards beyond those required for the award of the ZED Certificate of Silver and Bronze. Therefore, the MSMEs that receive certification at the Gold Level are expected to have achieved a higher level of quality and productivity than those that receive certification at the Silver or Bronze Levels.
- A way for MSMEs to enter demanding marketplace: The ZED Gold certificate is particularly popular among those buyers that make demands upon their suppliers. For this reason, MSMEs that obtain the ZED Gold certification are likely to have access to both their most demanding domestic and international markets.
- Helps to achieve full regulatory compliance: It also helps to ensure that small and medium-sized businesses comply with the strictest regulatory requirements. MSMEs must adhere to strict laws that will be part of the process they undergo when obtaining their ZED Gold certificates. This means MSMEs that receive ZED Gold Certificates are far less likely than others to incur fines and penalties due to regulatory non-compliance.
- Improves employee productivity and morale: It will increase employee productivity and morale in MSMEs (micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises). To achieve the ZED Gold Accreditation, MSMEs need to involve their employees in the enhancement of quality and sustainability. This could lead to increased morale and productivity from employees and have a positive impact on the entire organisation.
